Process/Key Issues:
Dave and I are both highly improvisational. This formed the foundation of our collaboration as we used short pieces of text or music as leaping off points to create extended improvised pieces that alternated between spoken words and music. I would write a few lines while listening to Dave play. I would then read these lines while Dave listened and immediately played a response, and so forth. This material helped us discover and experience each other's creative conceits. It also provided us avenues to each discuss the other's less familiar medium.
Through these conversations we discovered a mutual concern for art that interrogates form while remaining accessible and meaningful to listeners/readers who are unversed in the medium's discourses. That is to say, we both like art that can be enjoyed simultaneously by experts and by laymen. It was this dialog, as well as a desire to exploit the concert hall as a performative and a political space, that guided the development of our piece.
