Voiceworks Partners
Birkbeck College

The internationally regarded Contemporary Poetics Research Centre at Birkbeck College is part of the School of Arts. The Centre is committed to exploring, though poetic and critical practice, the role of experiment in contemporary poetry. It is concerned with current practice in all its dimensions: voice, sound, kinetic performance, and visual work. It brings together a group of MA and PhD students, and engages, more widely, with poets and readers, through workshops and readings. The Poetics Centre students taking part in the Voiceworks project are active performers and writers who work and publish in a number of media. They include this year associate students from the London Consortium PhD programme and from the Poetic Practice PhD at Royal Holloway University of London. This project has offered students a unique opportunity to collaborate with composers, musicians and singers. Exploring relationships between music and poetry has heightened students’ awareness of the possibilities of their own work. Since its inception in 2006 the programme has produced some extraordinary and original work for voice, opening up what the making of song might become in the twenty-first century.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama
Composers at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama thrive in collaborative contexts, and each year the department runs a variety of projects placing student composers with actors, dancers, singers and visual artists. So we are delighted that Wigmore Hall have enabled us to work with writers, establishing this new partnership between the Guildhall School Composition Department and the Contemporary Poetics Research Centre at Birkbeck College. This year, we have also involved fourth year undergraduate students from the Vocal Studies department as part of their Contemporary Specialism course, and we are particularly grateful to Armin Zanner for his invaluable assistance in coaching singers. The remarkable variety and inventiveness of the finished works attest to remarkably fruitful pairings, and if the previous two years are indicative, some of these creative partnerships will endure well beyond the end of this particular project.
