Matthew McGuigan is a tenor currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Born in Sydney, Australia, Matthew started his formal music training later than most, as he preferred to spend most of his time on the beach. Beginning Jazz piano lessons at twelve and Classical at fourteen Matthew was an aspiring concert pianist until he discovered he could sing and dance. Upon this realisation musical theatre was obviously the way forward. Beginning singing lessons at fifteen Matthew moved from strength to strength performing in shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor dreamcoat to name a few as well as touring Hong Kong with John Morrison’s big band.
At eighteen Matthew made the switch from Musical Theatre to Classical and aged nineteen moved to London to commence his studies at the GSMD. Since then he has performed in Sweeney Todd, les Pecheurs de Perles, die Zauberflöte, Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, as well as concert works including, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Gounod’s St Cecillia Mass, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Verdi’s as well as Mozart’s and Faure’s Requiems, Mahler’s Second Symphony and many more. Excerpts of Matthew’s portrayal of Peter Grimes will be televised on Channel 4 in January 2012 as part of a documentary. Graduating from his bachelor of Music with honors this year Matthew is pleased to be beginning his Masters of Music Performance at the GSMD in September.
