Anthony Birnie, born and raised in Amsterdam, completed a degree in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Amsterdam before embarking on the path of Music. Currently he studies with Professor David Pollard at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Anthony is a fervent advocate of Song and Lieder: he has sung in several recitals in The Netherlands, United Kingdom and France. More recently he performed at the Oxford Lieder Festival as part of their Master-course on the Song Repertoire.
He has taken part in Masterclasses with Thomas Hampson, Gerald Finley, Udo Reinemann, Martin Katz, Julius Drake, Roger Vignoles, Anna Larsson and Felicity Palmer.
Apart from the Song Repertoire, he has appeared in very diverse productions such as Gilbert&Sullivan's Trial by Jury (Plaintiff), Sondheim's Into the Woods (Rapunzel's Prince), Medée (La Vengeance) by Charpantier and in opera scenes from Nozze di Figaro (Il conte Almaviva), Die Zauberflöte (Papageno) by Mozart, Orphée aux Enfers (Jupiter) by Offenbach and Barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro) by Rossini. He also participated in the Opera Workshops organized by British Youth Opera, under the direction of William Kerley.
At GSMD he has worked with coaches such as Eugene Asti, Sarah Walker, Graham Johnson, Iain Burnside and Lada Valesova.
