Described by the Guardian as "clearly a name to watch", Patrick Brennan (b. 1985) showed early promise as a pianist, studying at the Royal Irish Academy from 1995-2004 with Réamonn Keary, winning the 2004 Margaret O'Hea prize for piano and also reaching the national semi-final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Between 2004 and 2008 he continued his piano studies with Julian Jacobson at the Royal College of Music. In 2010 Patrick graduated with distinction from the MMus course in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he was taught by Paul Newland. During his time at the Guildhall School, he was also the winner of a composition competition run by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was commissioned to write a piece which was rehearsed and premiered at their 2010 "Resound" summer course. In June 2011, he was announced as the winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's "Inspired by the Stars" competition for young composers. In August of the same year he was awarded a bursary from Dartington International Summer School to study advanced composition with Gerald Barry and Richard Baker. Patrick is currently a designated RPS Young Artist and a Composition Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he studies with Julian Anderson.
