Benjamin started his musical life as a clarinettist, aged ten and undertook undergraduate studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire under Tim Lines and Michael Harris and bass clarinet under Mark O’Brien. His orchestral successes have included places on the CBSO and Philharmonia training schemes, extensive performances with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain as well as a place in the final round of auditions for the European Union Youth Orchestra and the final of the Conservatoire woodwind competition. He has attended master classes and lessons with Robert Plane, Barnaby Robson, Janet Hilton, Paulo di Gaspari and Tony Pay. Whilst in Birmingham Ben turned his attentions to new music, both performing and composing. He has taken part in many workshops with composers including Louis Andriessen, Fredric Rzewski, Ed Bennett and Oscar Edelstein. He recently performed Worker’s Union with Ed Bennett’s Decibel ensemble and La Passione with the Conservatoire’s Thallein ensemble in front of Andriessen himself. His own compositions have been performed, either by himself or others in Birmingham, Leeds, London and elsewhere. Benjamin is currently studying for a Masters in composition at GSMD under James Weeks.

Benjamin is supported by the Guildhall School Trust.
