Joseph Padfield was born and grew up in London. He began his voice training at the Junior Royal Academy of Music under the tuition of Sara Reynolds, before moving on to The Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is in the final year of his degree, studying with John Evans.

Most recently he has performed the role of Death in Holst's Savitri, and Professor in Stephen Oliver's The Waiter's Revenge, with Minotaur Music Theatre at the Rosemary Branch in Islington, where he has also performed the role of Bartley in Vaughan-Williams' Riders to the Sea. During the summer he covered the role of Pluto in Stephen Oliver's Euridice as well as being a member of the chorus in Puccini's La Boheme with BYO at the Peacock Theatre. In 2009 he performed as a member of the Opera Holland Park chorus in Un Ballo in Maschera (Verdi) and Kát'a Kabanová (Janáček).
