John Mackay is a poet and former freelance journalist and teacher. He is studying for a PhD in contemporary American elegy at Birkbeck College, focusing on the poetry of Mary Jo Bang, Mark Doty, Susan Howe, and Dean Young.
John has had work published in magazines, anthologies, and books about personal writing, most recently Writing Your Self (2010, Continuum). His poetry has been translated into German, in a collaboration with Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, and is published in an anthology, poetry tREnD (LIT Verlag, 2010). His work has also been translated into Romanian, in a collaboration with Bucharest University, and was featured in a radio broadcast by the Romanian National Broadcasting Corporation in November 2008. In 2008, he won a Best Individual Poem Award at the Derwent Poetry Festival in Derbyshire, and his work appears in the anthology Buzz (Templar, 2008).
John reads his poetry at venues in London and around the country. He also has experience of running poetry events, and currently helps to organise Poetry in Palmers Green, featuring local and international poets.
